The Goddamn Particle
“No, no! The adventures first, explanations take such a dreadful time.”
…rephrasing Kipling, if science were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten…
PS: Did you know that?
The Higgs boson, the subatomic particle that has brought a Nobel Prize has been so difficult to find that its took 40 years. Higgs, Englert, and Brout predicted in 1964 that there must be something that explains why other particles have mass: that something is the Higgs boson
The nickname “The God particle” was the invention of an editor, who didn’t want Leon Lederman, to use as title of one of his popular books “the Goddamn Particle” (which would have been much more appropriate given the struggle to discover it).
The editor suggested that a book entitled “The God particle” could have sold many more copies!!!
